Do you produce according to the drawing in the drawer or the latest revision?

Drawings are inevitable when bringing a product from design to the physical world. Once product development has been digitised, many people mistakenly expect manufacturing to run like clockwork. However, the reality is often different, as the digitisation wave has stopped rolling before it hit the production floor.

The challenge we encounter with many of our manufacturing customers is that it is difficult to keep track of the many drawing revisions and always ensure that the latest one is being used. This problem is compounded by the increased frequency of introducing design changes. This puts pressure on the individual production worker and foreman, as the many physical documents are easily lost, put in the wrong drawer or have to be found on the production floor to be manually replaced by a revised version. The common denominator for all these errors is that they can cost a company dearly and set production back. If you're lucky, the assembly department discovers the error before the product has left the factory - if you're unlucky, an assembler on the other side of the globe is left with faulty goods that, from the ERP system, appear to have been made and delivered correctly.

KEEP THE DRAWINGS DIGITAL

To meet this challenge, Curit sees that more and more of our customers have already started digitising the production floor. Specifically, several customers are working with each workstation having a PC with a digital run list that shows both real-time order data and valid drawings. This way, the foreman and production employee can focus on producing the product and not chasing paperwork.

How does the solution work in IFS Applications?

IFS Applications is an ERP system that broadly covers the company's flow and processes. It converts the complicated processes into a streamlined and clear flow, becoming a working tool for both operational and financial processes.

The module Document management makes it possible to store drawings in the system and link them to the objects they relate to. This could be goods, customers, orders, shipments or anything else. This ensures that the user always has valid and relevant documentation at hand when working in IFS Applications.

IFS digital driving list

What are the benefits of the digital solution
  • Ensure you always use the correct revision of your drawings and documents
  • You can attach both your own and third-party documents
  • Documents are at hand when the product is produced
  • Documents are attached to both the specific production order and the item itself in the system, creating transparency. Both during production but also historically.
  • You can attach the same document to multiple items and to one or more revisions - updating the drawing now automatically applies to all items with the same revision
